A breakdown or impairment of critical infrastructures leads to considerable disturbances of public safety and order. Therefore, resilience is an important criterion for the design and operation of electrical power systems. Due to the decentralization of power supply, increasing connectivity and sector coupling, the resilience of distribution grids must be actively enhanced. A paradigm shift towards resilient grid operation is therefore taking place in order to continue to guarantee stability, voltage quality and reliability in normal operation and during disrupted or critical grid states. The digitalization of the distribution grids is an absolutely necessary prerequisite for resilient grid operation. Only the deployment of information and communication technologies makes it possible to monitor and intelligently control the distribution grids and the connected assets. In this cyber-physical system, therefore, in addition to the resilience of the electrical power system, cyber-resilience also plays a key role, e.g. to prevent and counteract the effects of cyber attacks on the electric power system.
The goal of the research group Resilient Grid Operation and Digitalization is to answer practice-relevant research questions to ensure resilient grid operation today and in the future. In addition, the transfer and analysis of selected novel concepts is carried out in demonstration environments. For this purpose, cross-domain simulation environments (dynamic/stationary/event-based) are used for the analysis of the cyber-physical system and supplemented by algorithms for mathematical or AI-supported multisectoral optimization. By coupling the developed solutions with primary and secondary technical components of the Center for Grid Integration and Storage Technologies, a virtually scalable cyber-physical research environment is created. With the results of the demonstration, the verification and validation of the used and newly developed simulation models is performed. The experience gained is confirmed in numerous field tests conducted by the research group and its project partners.
