ICT planning
The growing number of decentralised entities in distribution grids leads to an increasing demand on reliable communication networks. Particularly, the roll out of advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) sets the focus of network planning to heterogeneous requirements like bit rate, latencies and robustness. In this context, technologies like LTE and Powerline Communication are playing decisive roles. Especially in regions and buildings that are difficult to access, hybrid communication networks can be the optimal solution.
The IAEW offers planning solutions for suitable information and communication technology based on electrical power grid data. Therefore, an internal database of laboratory investigations on distribution grid assets as well as a Powerline Communication simulation is used to evaluate the grid-specific trade-offs between the different technology options.
