By virtue of their high potential for efficiency and cross-sectoral synergies, districts represent an important component for achieving German and European-wide climate and sustainability goals. For a variety of questions surrounding the topic of energy-related district planning, the IAEW utilizes well-proven methods for modelling, simulation, multi-criteria optimization and evaluation of distributed multi-energy systems. Predefined scenarios serve to evaluate potential designs of concurrent local energy supply options in terms of costs, energy and climate balances. Moreover, economic-ecological optimisation procedures enable the identification of cross-building renovation, technology and grid expansion measures which, taking into account current or future legal and regulatory frameworks, constitute dominant efficiency strategies and thus form a substantiated basis for decision-making by municipal actors. In addition, systemic impact analyses of innovative, cross-sectoral district planning and operation strategies involving cross-sectoral energy system operational procedures are also available.
